Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie Forbush, a spunky Arkansas nurse, falls in love with debonair French planter Emile DeBecque. She refuses his proposal of marriage when she learns that the mother of his children was an island native and finds herself unable to ignore the prejudices on which she was raised.
Meanwhile, marine Lt. Joe Cable arrives on the island to undertake a dangerous mission that could turn the tide of the war. Facing the same fears that haunt Nellie, he denies himself a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he has fallen in love.
This Pulitzer Prize-winning Rodgers & Hammerstein musical of love, loneliness, espionage and prejudice is based on the James Michener book and filled with great songs like “Bali H’ai,” “A Wonderful Guy,” “There Is Nothing Like a Dame,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair,” and “Some Enchanted Evening.”
